Ja, lees het maar goed, het Zuid-Hollandse Katwijk en het Zeeuwse Kattendijke, beiden grenzend aan zout water. Daar houden de overeenkomsten wel zo’n beetje mee op....
Tot zaterdag 13 maart 2021, de dag waarop een Katwijkse en een Kattendijkse ingezetene met een ferme corona-boks en een glas champagne de inschrijving voor 's werelds zwaarste roeirace - de Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2023 - bezegelden.
Deze Challenge is een roeitocht van bijna 5.000 kilometer van het Canarische eiland La Gomera naar het Caribische eiland Antiqua.
Kees Verweel uit Kattendijke en Paul van der Linde uit Katwijk stappen begin december 2023 in een oceaanroeiboot om daar na, 5, 6, of 7 weken weer uit te stappen. In de tussentijd is een plasje, genaamd de Atlantische Oceaan, bedwongen. “Een levensdroom”, “een enorme uitdaging”, “het kriebelde al lang, nu tijd om te krabben”, “iets doen ver buiten je comfortzone”, “iets doen buiten je voorstellingsvermogen”, “leef je droom”; zomaar wat clichés die voor Kees en Paul redenen zijn om aan deze zware roeitocht deel te nemen.
En hoewel de heren ruim 150 kilometer van elkaar wonen en het aantal ontmoetingen wellicht op 1 hand te tellen zijn, is het vertrouwen in elkaar om deze uitdaging aan te gaan, groot. Wat Kees en Paul bindt, is naast dat vertrouwen de liefde voor sloeproeien. Oh ja, en nog iets, beiden zullen bij de start van de Challenge 60 jaar oud zijn.....
Wie zijn Kees en Paul?
Kees (1963), samenwonend met Silke en 3 kinderen roeit sloep sinds zijn 17e, begon ooit op de Zeevaarschool en heeft daarna bij diverse teams in heel Nederland geroeid. Van Deca Dutch (Alkmaar) via Stad Kampen naar de Brielse Roeiclub, en sinds zijn verhuizing naar Zeeland vele jaren bij Team Seahorse (Kortgene) en momenteel roeit Kees bij Sloeproeien Zeeland (Kortgene). Hij heeft alles wel een keer meegemaakt tijdens de vele races in Nederland - waaronder 16 x Harlingen-Terschelling - en de Great River Race Londen. Er staat nog één ultieme roei uitdaging op zijn lijst; een oceaan over roeien!
Paul (1963), getrouwd en 3 kinderen, sport zijn hele leven al, van turnen tot voetbal, van atletiek tot sloeproeien. Hij is in 2013 gestopt met sloeproeien bij RV Ferox in Katwijk. In 2017 een comeback gemaakt, als invaller voor de HT-race (zijn 9e). Met hardlopen en fietsen, zowel wielrennen als mountainbiken, vult hij nu zijn sportieve leven. Na 4 keer deelname aan het NK Tegenwindfietsen (😊) en het lopen van de marathon, gaat hij nu op voor zijn volgende sportieve hoogtepunt, roeiend de Atlantische oceaan oversteken.

Until Saturday, March 13, 2021, the day on which a resident of Katwijk and a resident of Kattendijke registered for the worlds toughest row - Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2023 - celebrating this moment with a covid-19-fist and a glass of champagne!
This Challenge is a rowing adventure of 5.000 kilometers from La Gomera (Canary Islands) Antigua (Caribbean Island), crossing the Atlantic!
Kees Verweel from Kattendijke and Paul van der Linde from Katwijk will board an ocean rowingboat early December 2023 to disembark after 5, 6 or 7 weeks at sea. In the meantime, a pool called the Atlantic Ocean has been conquered. “A life dream”, “an enormous challenge”, “do something far beyond your comfort zone”, “do something beyond your imagination”, “live your dream”; just a few clichés that are reasons for Kees and Paul to participate in this tough rowing challenge.
Although these gentlemen live more than 150 kilometers apart from each other, and the number of encounters can be counted on one hand, each others trust to participate this challenge is great. In addition to this trust, Kees and Paul do love lifeboat rowing. Oh yeah, and one more thing, both will be 60 years old at the start of the Challenge......
Who are Kees and Paul?
Kees (1963), living together with Silke, 3 children, has been rowing in lifeboats since he was 17. He started at the Nautical College, and then rowed with various teams throughout the Netherlands. From Deca Dutch (Alkmaar) via Stad Kampen to the Brielse Rowing Club. Since Kees moved to Zeeland he has been rowing with Team Seahorse (Kortgene), currently Kees is rowing at Sloeproeien Zeeland (Kortgene). He has experienced a lot during the many races in the Netherlands - including 16 x Harlingen-Terschelling - and the Great River Race London. There is one more ultimate rowing challenge on his list; row across an ocean!
Paul (1963), married, 3 children, has been sporting his entire life, from gymnastics to football, from athletics to dinghy rowing. In 2013 he stopped rowing at RV Ferox in Katwijk. Paul made his comeback in 2017, as a substitute for the HT race (his 9th). With running and cycling, both race cycling as well as mountain biking, he lives his sporting life. After 4 times participating in the NK Tegenwindfietsen (😊) and running the marathon, he is now going for his next sporting highlight, crossing the Atlantic Ocean by rowing an oceanboat!
